IT AIMS TO QUESTION COMMON PRACTICE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF HOUSING BASED ON PRESCRIPTIVE REGULATIONS AND NON-INTERDISCIPLINARY WORK, WHICH HAS RESULTED IN POOR QUALITY BUILDING REQUIREMENTS. THE FIRST STAGE CONSISTED IN DEFINING PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR ASPECTS SUCH AS ENERGY DEMAND, U VALUE, AIR TIGHTNESS AND INDOOR AIR QUALITY FOR A SPECIFIC CASE OF LOW-COST HOUSES LOCATED IN THE CITY OF TEMUCO. AN INTEGRATED DESIGN PROCESS WAS CARRIED OUT BY AN INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM OF PROFESSIONALS SPECIALIZED IN EACH OF THE PERFORMANCE ASPECTS THAT WERE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. CONSIDERING THE PDA OF THE COMMUNES OF TEMUCO AND PADRE LAS CASAS, AND THE SYSTEM LIMITS OF UNE-EN 15978:2012 FOR THE PRODUCT AND USE STAGES, THIS STUDY COVERED THE INDICATORS OF ENERGY, CARBON FOOTPRINT, ECONOMIC COST AND EMISSIONS OF FINE PARTICULATE MATTER (PM2.5), ON THERMAL ENVELOPES OF A HOUSE. THERE IS CURRENTLY AN INCREASING TREND IN MULTI-STOREY TIMBER BUILDINGS, BECAUSE OF THE PROJECTED GROWTH IN THE DEMAND FOR HOUSING IN URBAN AREAS BETWEEN NOW AND 2050, ALONG WITH THE URGENT NEED FOR A MORE SUSTAINABLE AND PRODUCTIVE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THESE BUILDINGS IS NOW POSSIBLE THANKS TO THE NEW ADVANCES IN ARCHITECTURE, ENGINEERING, AND CONSTRUCTION (AEC) AND THE NEW TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS AROUND TIMBER CONSTRUCTION. ITS INDUSTRIALIZATION REQUIREMENTS IMPLY A PARADIGM SHIFT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY, WHICH REQUIRES, AMONG OTHER ASPECTS, THE EARLY AND COLLABORATIVE INTEGRATION OF STAKEHOLDERS IN ITS DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PROCESS. ACCORDING TO THIS, THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS REVIEW ARTICLE IS TO DETERMINE THE MAIN ADVANCES AND LIMITATIONS RELATED TO THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF MULTI-STOREY TIMBER BUILDINGS, CATEGORIZING THEM IN ASPECTS SUCH AS SUSTAINABILITY, ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION SCIENCES, AND COLLABORATIVE DESIGN. THE METHODOLOGY OF THIS ARTICLE WAS BASED ON THE REVIEW OF 266 ARTICLES PUBLISHED IN WEB OF SCIENCE (WOS), AS INDEXED SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS, BETWEEN 2017 AND MID-2022, PERFORMING A COMPARATIVE AND COOCCURRENCE ANALYSIS OF THE CONTENTS. THE RESULTS EVIDENCED THAT 73% OF THE ARTICLES SHOWED ADVANCES AND LIMITATIONS CORRESPONDING TO THE ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION SCIENCES CATEGORY, 23% TO SUSTAINABILITY, AND THE REMAINING 4% TO COLLABORATIVE DESIGN. THE MAIN ADVANCES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MULTI-STOREY TIMBER BUILDINGS ARE RELATED TO SEISMIC ANALYSIS, CONNECTIONS DESIGN, FIRE PERFORMANCE, AND FIRE DESIGN. WHILE THE MAIN LIMITATIONS ARE RELATED TO SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY, THE RESULTS ARE NOT CONCLUSIVE DUE TO THE LOW NUMBER OF PUBLICATIONS THAT SUPPORT THEM. - PublicaciónHIGH INDOOR COMFORT AND VERY LOW ENERGY CONSUMPTION THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PASSIVE HOUSE STANDARD IN CHILE.(Revista de la Construccion, 2012)

THERE ARE TWO DIVERGENT REALITIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR: ON THE ONE HAND AN INADEQUATE INDOOR COMFORT AND ON THE OTHER HAND, VERY HIGH ENERGY CONSUMPTION. BOTH ARE PRODUCTS OF A LOW BUILDING QUALITY. THIS ARTICLE SHOWS THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO SAVE ABOUT 80% OF ENERGY IN SPACE HEATING AND COOLING IN THE CENTRAL-SOUTH AREA OF CHILE, WITH LOW ENERGY BUILDINGS WHICH REACH THE SO-CALLED PASSIVE HOUSE STANDARD. USING THIS STANDARD NOT ONLY REDUCES THE ENERGY DEMAND OF BUILDINGS BUT ALSO INCREASES ITS INTERNAL COMFORT CONDITIONS. A PARAMETRIC STUDY WAS UTILIZED IN ORDER TO ANALYZE, BY WHAT MEANS IT IS POSSIBLE TO MEET THE STANDARD IN THREE CITIES IN CENTRAL-SOUTH OF CHILE. THE TECHNOLOGIES TO BUILD PASSIVE HOUSES, SUCH AS HIGH THERMAL INSULATION, DOUBLE GLAZING WINDOWS WITH LOW-E COATING AND ARGON FILLING OR VENTILATION SYSTEMS WITH HEAT RECOVERY ARE ALREADY AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET. WITHOUT DOUBT, THE BUILDINGS THAT ACHIEVE THE PASSIVE HOUSE STANDARD HAVE AN HIGHER INITIAL INVESTMENT COST THAN A TRADITIONAL BUILDING, BUT ON THE OTHER HAND, A PASSIVE HOUSE HAS APPROXIMATELY 80% LOWER RUNNING COSTS THAN A TRADITIONAL BUILDING. DUE TO THIS SAVING IN OPERATING COSTS, IT IS POSSIBLE TO ECONOMIZE THE HIGHER INITIAL COST DURING THE LIFETIME OF THE CONSTRUCTION. - PublicaciónINTEGRATED DESIGN EXPERIENCES FOR ENERGY-EFFICIENT HOUSING IN CHILE(INNOVACIÓN EN LA CONSTRUCCIÓN, 2019)

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH FIRST, SEVEN MAIN DESIGN FEATURES OF ENERGY-EFFICIENT BUILDINGS IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES WERE IDENTIFIED. SECOND, THESE FEATURES WERE REVIEWED IN TWO PROFESSIONAL CASE STUDIES FROM ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICES AND TWO ACADEMIC EXERCISES ON RESIDENTIAL DESIGN IN SOUTH-CENTRAL CHILE. IN ALL CASES REVIEWED, CHARACTERISTICS OF INTEGRATED DESIGN WERE VERIFIED TO REDUCTIONS IN ENERGY LOSS AND DEMAND. FINALLY, THE PROCEDURE IMPLEMENTED WAS EVALUATED THROUGH SURVEYS OF THOSE PRACTITIONERS RESPONSIBLE FOR EACH EXPERIENCE STUDIED. FINDINGS THIS PROCESS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO HIGHLIGHT FOUR MAIN FEATURES OF INTEGRATED DESIGN, NAMELY, PRE-ESTABLISHED PERFORMANCE GOALS, INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION, REGULAR BROAD-RANGING MEETINGS AND THE USE OF PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT TOOLS. WITH THESE TECHNIQUES, REDUCTIONS OF MORE THAN 50 PER CENT IN THE ENERGY REQUIREMENTS OF THE HOUSING DESIGNS WERE ACHIEVED, WHILE SAFEGUARDING THE FUNCTIONAL, AESTHETIC AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF THE PROJECTS. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS HOWEVER, PROFESSIONALS CURRENTLY WORKING IN THIS FIELD DID EXPRESS THEIR CONCERN REGARDING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DESIGN AND THE TIME NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE PROCESS. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS FURTHERMORE, THIS EXPERIENCE ALSO IDENTIFIED SIMILAR MODIFICATIONS MADE TO THE DESIGN OF THE HOUSES, WHICH REVEALED GENERAL POSSIBILITIES FOR IMPROVING ENERGY PERFORMANCE. HOWEVER, THE APPLICATION OF THIS STRATEGY REQUIRES THE STUDY AND DEVELOPMENT OF METHODOLOGIES THAT ACHIEVE THE NECESSARY DESIGN FLEXIBILITY TO OBTAIN ADEQUATE LEVELS OF PRODUCTION AND CUSTOMIZATION. BASED ON THIS, THIS WORK ANALYZES THE MODULARITY CONDITIONS OBSERVED IN FIVE BUILDINGS BUILT BETWEEN 2002 AND 2016, IN ORDER TO STUDY THE STANDARDIZATION CRITERIA IMPLEMENTED. TO ACHIEVE THIS, AN ANALYSIS IS MADE OF THE UNDERLYING MODULARITY IN THE DESIGN AND THE CONDITIONS OF VARIATION OR REPETITION PRESENTED. IN THIS SENSE, THE USE OF DIFFERENT MODULARITY CRITERIA WAS OBSERVED BETWEEN THE FIRST EXPERIENCES DEVELOPED AND THE MOST RECENT BUILDINGS, GIVEN BY THE TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS OF RECENT YEARS. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO ANALYZE THE STATE OF NEUTRALITY OF THE COMPONENTS OF AN EMERGENCY HOUSING PROJECT IN MEXICO FINANCED THROUGH PUBLIC RESOURCES, FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF THE CO? EMISSIONS GENERATED FROM ITS USE, AND ALSO ANALYZING THE LEVEL OF THERMAL HABITABILITY FOR ITS OCCUPANTS. A SIMPLIFIED LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT APPROACH WAS USED HERE, IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS AT DIFFERENT STAGES IN THE BUILDING LIFE CYCLE UNDER SPECIFIC CHILEAN CONDITIONS. ONE SQUARE METER OF A STANDARD HOUSE WAS USED AS THE FUNCTIONAL UNIT, AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS WERE RECORDED FOR ALL STAGES. THE CARBON FOOTPRINT OF THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE WAS ALSO ESTIMATED. THE SYSTEM LIMITS INCLUDED ALL ENERGY REQUIREMENTS RELATED TO THE MANUFACTURING OF BUILDING MATERIALS USED IN FOUNDATIONS AND ENCLOSURES, CONSTRUCTION AND THE HOUSE USAGE PHASE. DECONSTRUCTION OR END OF LIFE PHASES WERE EXCLUDED FROM THE SYSTEM LIMITS UNDER STUDY. RESULTS INDICATE THAT ENERGY CONSUMPTION DURING THE HOUSE CONSTRUCTION PHASE COULD BE NEGLECTED AS COMPARED WITH REQUIREMENTS IN OTHER LIFE CYCLE STAGES. THIS INVESTIGATION AIMS TO SYSTEMATIZE THE INDICATORS POTENTIALLY APPLICABLE IN A PROCESS OF SELECTION OF BUILDING MATERIALS BASED ON SUSTAINABILITY. FOR THE DEFINITION OF THESE INDICATORS WE ADOPTED THE MAIN TOOLS FOR SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT AS REFERENCES. FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATION WE CONSIDERED THE SOURCES WITH KNOWN RELIABILITY, MAINLY FROM NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL BOOKS AND SCIENTIFIC PAPERS. ON THE BASIS OF THE SYSTEMATIZATION, WE ESTABLISHED THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE INDICATORS AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL DIMENSIONS OF THE CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABILITY. WE ALSO MADE A COMPLEMENTARY ANALYSIS POINTING OUT THE STAGES OF THE LIFE CYCLE IN WHICH THE INDICATORS HELP TO FAVOR SUSTAINABILITY. AS A MAJOR RESULT, 33 INDICATORS WERE LISTED AND APPRAISED, WHERE A GREATER RELATION OF THE INDICATORS WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL DIMENSION OF SUSTAINABILITY CAN BE NOTICED. IT WAS ALSO OBSERVED THAT THE INDICATORS ARE CORRELATED IN A PROPORTIONAL MANNER WITH THE STAGES OF THE LIFE CYCLE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE USE/OPERATION STEP, IN WHICH THERE IS LESS MANIPULATION OF MATERIAL.
