;ANDREA PAZ LLORENS VARGASJIMENA ALARCÓN CASTROTHE PRESENT STUDY RESEARCH IS FOCUSED ON INNOVATION IN THE USE OF MDF (MEDIUM-DENSITY FIBERBOARD) FOR INDOOR COATING IN WAITING AREAS, INCORPORATING TEXTURE AS A DIFFERENTIATION FACTOR FOR SURFACE FINISHINGS MARKETED UNDER HIGHLY TECHNICAL AND AESTHETICAL REQUIREMENTS. METHODS USED IN AFFECTIVE ENGINEERING ARE INCORPORATED IN THE DESIGN PROCESS TO DEVISE PRODUCTS THAT SATISFY USER'S EMOTIONAL NEEDS. THE EVOLUTION OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT FROM A FUNCTIONAL/PRACTICAL DESIGN TO AN EMOTIONAL DESIGN THAT CREATES LINKS WITH USERS IS OBSERVED, WHERE THE WAY TO COLLECT PERCEPTUAL REACTIONS TO STIMULI BECOMES AN IMPORTANT WEIGHTING TOOL INTEGRATED INTO THE DESIGN PROCESS. THE SEMANTIC DIFFERENTIAL METHOD, ONE OF THE MOST USED ONES IN AFFECTIVE ENGINEERING TO COLLECT EMOTIONAL DATA IS VALIDATED AS ONE OF THE MOST RELIABLE AND TRUSTWORTHY IN THE DESIGN IDEATION PROCESS. INTERVIEWS TO 108 INDIVIDUALS WERE CARRIED OUT TO KNOW ABOUT THE EMOTIONS THEY FELT AND WOULD LIKE TO FEEL IN WAITING AREAS. WITH THIS INFORMATION, 16 TEXTURES CONSISTENT WITH THE EXPECTED EMOTIONS WERE DESIGNED AND PROTOTYPES MANUFACTURED TO BE SUBJECTED TO FOCUS GROUPS. ;JIMENA ALARCÓN CASTRO ;JUAN CARLOS BRIEDE WESTERMEYERCYNTHIA IVONNE DROGUETT CASTILLOTHE ECONOMY OF THE BIO-BIO REGION IN CHILE IS MAINLY LINKED TO A NATURAL RESOURCES SCENARIO WHERE PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITIES HAVE A STRONG PRESSURE ON THE ENVIRONMENT. THE REGION IS THE LARGEST FORESTRY CENTER IN THE COUNTRY, WITH 83% OF BOARD MANUFACTURE. HOWEVER, ACTIVITIES IN THIS SECTOR, BASED MAINLY ON THE SUBSTITUTION OF NATIVE FORESTS BY PLANTATIONS OF PINUS RADIATA, AND THE REGION'S SECOND PLACE AS INDUSTRIAL SOLID WASTE (ISW) GENERATOR IN THE COUNTRY ARE DETRIMENTAL TO ITS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. THE PRESENT RESEARCH AIMS TO STUDY THE COMPATIBILITY AMONG PARTICLES OF P. RADIATA, UREA-FORMALDEHYDE AND COWHIDE FROM LOCAL FOOTWEAR MANUFACTURING AND CLASSIFIED AS ISW. THE METHODOLOGY INCLUDES AN IDEATION PHASE TO DETERMINE FORMAT AND LEATHER PERCENTAGE TO BE INCORPORATED AS RAW MATERIAL INTO A BASE MIXTURE USED IN THE INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION OF CONVENTIONAL PARTICLE BOARDS (SECTION 63 OF ECE-FAO CLASSIFICATION). TEST TUBE SAMPLES COMPOSED OF P. RADIATA AND UREA-FORMALDEHYDE PARTICLES, AND OF P. RADIATA, UREA-FORMALDEHYDE AND LEATHER PARTICLES, ARE ELABORATED FOR TESTING OF PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES WHICH ALLOW COMPARISON OF THE FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE OF BOTH TYPES OF BOARDS. THE TESTS PERFORMED SHOWED THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO REPLACE P. AS A RESULT OF WRONG PATTERNS CONSUMPTION, RENEWABLE AND NON-RENEWABLE NATURAL RESOURCES OVERHARVESTING SUCH LARGE-SCALE FOOD PRODUCTION , HAVE GENERATED A NUMBER OF DRAWBACKS IN TERMS OF WATER SCARCITY AND LANDSCAPE EMPORISHMEN. THIS , ADDED TO THE INCREASING CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS, REPRESENTS AN ACTUAL CRITICAL SCENARIO AND A CRUCIAL EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGE FOR NEW GENERATIONS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMIND THAT ONLY 2.5% OF THE WATER OF PLANET EARTH IS FRESHWATER. THIS PERCENTAGE CAN BE FOUND CONCENTRATED IN GROUNDWATER, GLACIERS AND POLAR ICE CAPS; LEAVING ONLY 1,3% REMAINING ON SUPERFICIAL SWEETWATER, THIS MEANS IN LAKES, RIVERS AND STREAMS, THOSE NATURAL VALIUS FONTAINS ONES THAT UNFORTUNATELY ARE IN A INCREASING AND ALARMING SCARCITY (HOEKSTRA AND MESFIN, 2012). ONE OF THE AREAS WITH HIGHEST RATE OF DEMAND FOR HYDRIC RESOURCES IS THE AGRICULTURE SECTOR. ACCORDING TO THE WORLD FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION (FAO, 2020), THIS SECTOR WILL FACE AN ENORMOUS CHALLENGE IN ORDER TO FEED AN EXPONENTIAL NUMBER OF PEOPLE EXPECTED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. FOR THAT UNCERTAIN SCENARIO, FOOD PRODUCTION SHOULD INCREASE BY APPROXIMATELY 70%. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS ALARMING SITUATION IS PROJECTED REGARDLESS OF LIMITED LAND AVAILABILITY AND INCREMENTAL FRESHWATER SCARCITY. THE CONCEPT OF SMART FARMING REPRESENTS AN ALTERNATIVE THAT COMBINES ANCESTRAL KNOWLEDGE AND NEW MONITORING AND CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES IN TERMS OF FOOD PRODUCTION WITH LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT.VERTICAL GARDENS, HYDROPONICS AND AEROPONICS ARE TECHNIQUES IN FOOD CULTIVATION WITH A HIGH LEVEL OF INNOVATION AND A GREAT POSSIBILITY OF ADAPTABILITY TO THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PLACE. IN THIS REGARD, AQUAPONIC SYSTEMS REPRESENT A MORE SUSTAINABLE WAY OF OPTIMIZING WATER RESOURCES. THIS DUE TO THE ABILITY TO COMBINE IN A MORE SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AQUATIC SPECIES AND PLANTS. A SECOND ASPECT WAS THE LABORATORY EXPERIMENTATION WITH A NATURAL RESIN OBTAINED FROM CASTOR OIL, IN ORDER TO CREATE A FULLY BIODEGRADABLE MATERIAL AND CONTRIBUTE TO REDUCE NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT. THE BOARDS WERE DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED TO BE USED AS COATINGS FOR INTERIOR SPACES, WITH A FINISHED SURFACE OF BARE MATERIAL. AS THE INPUT FOR THE IDEATION PROCESS CONSIDERING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL COMFORT MATTERS FOR FUTURE USERS, METHODS OF AFFECTIVE ENGINEERING WERE INCORPORATED IN THE DEFINITION OF SURFACE FORMAL BOARD FEATURES, DESIGNING SINUOUS SURFACES THAT EVOKE FEELINGS OF CONFORT, DISTRACTION, TRANQUILITY AND COZYNESS. CORK IS A MATERIAL WIDELY USED TO MAKE STOPPERS FOR CONTAINERS IN THE WINE INDUSTRY. SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVES, SUCH AS THE REUSE OF THIS TYPE OF WASTE, ALLOW THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH-POTENTIAL MATERIALS THAT CAN BE APPLIED IN VARIOUS AREAS OF PRODUCT DESIGN. THE METHODOLOGY INCLUDES THE DESIGN OF A COATING BASED ON CORK AND THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANE (TPU) IN THE LABORATORY AND A USER STUDY TO DETERMINE ASPECTS OF PERCEIVED QUALITY, BASED ON KANSEI ENGINEERING. USER EVALUATIONS ARE POSITIVE REGARDING THE DEVELOPED PROTOTYPES. THE DISCUSSION RAISES THE RELEVANCE OF THE DESIGN OF EMERGING MATERIALS AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL MATERIALS, AS IS THE CASE OF THE MATERIAL RESULTING FROM THE EXPERIENCE CARRIED OUT. THE METHODOLOGY ADDRESSES STAGES OF IDENTIFICATION OF NEEDS FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL COMFORT OF HEALTH PERSONNEL, BASED ON THEIR EXPERIENCE OF USING FACIAL BARRIERS; IDENTIFICATION OF NATIONAL REGULATIONS FOR PPE; IDENTIFICATION OF THE MATERIAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL RESOURCES AVAILABLE IN THE REGION FOR THE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE OF FACIAL BARRIERS; IDEATION PROCESS IN THE DESIGN RESEARCH LABORATORY OF THE UNIVERSIDAD DEL BÍO-BÍO; VALIDATION WITH USERS; LABORATORY VALIDATION; DISINFECTION AND DISTRIBUTION. THE TEACHER DELIVERS KNOWLEDGE AND STUDENTS ARE PASSIVE RECEIVERS. THIS ARTICLE REFERS TO THE REFLEXIVE CRITICAL ANALYSIS CARRIED OUT BY A GROUP OF RESEARCHERS FROM THE EDUCATION AND DESIGN SECTOR, REGARDING THE ADVANTAGES, DISADVANTAGES, AND IMPROVEMENTS TO THE PEDAGOGICAL MODEL DESIGN BASED-LEARNING (DBL). IMPLEMENTED IN RURAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN CHILE. DESIGN-BASED LEARNING FOCUSES ON INTEGRATING DESIGN PROJECTS INTO THE CLASSROOM TO PROMOTE CREATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS AND TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WITH THE LEARNING OF CURRICULAR CONTENT THROUGH ENGAGEMENT IN REAL-WORLD, AND CROSS-CURRICULAR CHALLENGES. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO CONTRAST THE DBL PEDAGOGICAL MODEL WITH TRADITIONAL TEACHING METHODOLOGIES IN RURAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS. THE DATA COLLECTION METHODOLOGY IS BASED ON DESIGN RESEARCH METHODS AND ALLOWS MEASURING THE IMPACT GENERATED BY THE NEW SYNERGIES BETWEEN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS DERIVED FROM THE EXPERIMENTAL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE DBL PEDAGOGICAL MODEL.
