EFFECTS OF KNIVES JOINTING ON PLANED SURFACE QUALITY OF RADIATA PINE WOOD

dc.description.abstractTHE JOINTING ALLOWS OBTAINING A SINGLE CUTTING ORBIT, FOR ALL KNIVES INSTALLED ON THE PERIPHERY OF A ROTARY KNIFE HOLDER. AN EMERY STONE IS WORKED OVER THE CUTTING EDGE WHEN THEY ARE IN MOTION, WHICH PRODUCES A BEVEL, WHICH IS FORMED ACCORDING TO LEVEL OF THE RECTIFICATION. ACCURATE SELECTION OF THE BEVEL ALLOWS A UNIFORM CUT OF THE SURFACE OF THE LUMBER. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH, WAS TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF BEVEL WIDTH AND WEAR LEVEL (PLANNING LENGTH) OF KNIVES, ON ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND SURFACE QUALITY, DURING THE PLANNING PROCESS IN RADIATA PINE LUMBER. FOUR BEVEL WIDTHS AND FOUR WEAR LEVELS WERE TESTED. THE PLANNING PROCESS WAS CARRIED OUT USING A MOLDING MACHINE SPECIFICALLY ADJUSTED FOR THIS PURPOSE. GLUING SHEAR STRENGTH WAS USED AS A CRITERION TO EVALUATE THE WOOD SURFACE QUALITY. THE RESULTS SHOWED A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND BOTH BEVEL WIDTH AND WEAR LEVEL, AND A NEGATIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH GLUING SHEAR STRENGTH. BASED ON THE ABOVE, USING A 0,3 MM BEVEL, ALLOWED TO MINIMIZE THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND TO MAXIMIZE THE GLUING SHEAR STRENGTH DURING THE PLANNING OF RADIATA PINE, SINCE IT EXHIBITED LOWER ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND HIGHER SHEAR RESISTANCE.
